How can i get started buying used cars at auto auction?
I’d like to buy trade-ins from local dealers, or perhaps other auto auctions, so that I can later re-sell them for cash. Do i need to incorporate as a business at first? Do i need licensing? I’m currently in North Carolina.
To do either you need to be a dealer.
To be a dealer you have to jump through all kind of hoops, the biggest of which is getting garage liability insurance ($2000-2500 per year) and a place of business with a sign.
And getting a bond & license fees are least expensive of your concerns.
My suggestion would be to try to buy & sell on your own, out of the newspaper and unless you can make money on a regular basis do not bother with getting licensed.
Trust me, cars often sell for less out of the newspaper than dealer auctions so if you cant buy & sell out of the newspaper on your own, you don’t need to spend the money to be a licensed dealer.
Try to buy & sell cars with "open titles". Yes, its technically illegal. Its very, very rare for anyone to get in any real trouble over it.
Worst case scenario is you get taken to court, you tell the judge you didn’t know and he puts you on probation and tells you not to do it again. But that rarely, if ever, happens.
TRUE STORY…
I was a licensed dealer and often bought cars out of the newspaper.
One friday, I bought a truck for $1400.
I sold it a few days later for $2900 (My biggest profit ever in 12+ years in the car business).
A year later, I saw the same truck with 20,000 more miles bring $3250 at a dealer only auction. The buyer paid a buyers fee on top of that.
My advice, don’t become licensed until you have proven to yourself that you can profitably buy & sell cars you obtain elsewhere. You CAN buy cars for wholesale & below on the street. I used to do it often.
Now, after you get to selling 2-3 a month for a few months you can make the case for spending what it would to become a licensed dealer. The overhead just kills your chances of keeping your profit.

Where can I find an auto auction in the Boston area? Preferably south of Boston.?
I am new to the Boston area and I need to find where the premier car auctions are. Any advice or information is helpful, thank you.
Premier Car auctions are in England not Massachusetts. In Boston there are several car auctions but they are for dealers only and they are very strict about allowing only dealers. Any public, salvage or lein sale auctions are either scams or are not for a regular person looking for a car. Try buying cars from private parties. You will find ads in autotrader.com or craigslist.com
I recently went to a car auction and before business began the auctioneer read off a load of information. One of the points he pressed most firmly was the fact that the vehicles came with no warranty or guarantee whatsoever. Is he correct? Is there really no consumer protection at car auctions, and if so why are they unique in this way?
It is simply because all cars at an auction are considered trade sales. Therefore you buy under trade rules, first one is there is no warranty. Incidentally the same applies to ebay auctions if worded properly.
Why do you think auction cars are so much cheaper!
What’s the best way to promote a free online artist exhibit & auction site?
We’re a small group of artists that have started an online artist exhibit & auction site and want to get people aware of its existence. We want to have people from all over the world display and sell their original and unique work from our site but we have no money for advertising.
Agree that free advertising cost you nothing but time. That is a great way to get targeted traffic to your site. I never pay for advertising because if you take the time to learn the tricks, then you can find free ways to advertise effectively. No other type of advertising is more powerful than word of mouth. Get recommendations from others in the similar industry to be mentioned, promoted or included in an industry-specific ranking or recommendations list.
What step you need to take or have to have a car auction license? In the state of Florida?
What step you need to take or have to have a car auction license? In the state of Florida? Where you go to apply for one? In what you need to have?
If you are asking about attending a "Dealers Only" car auction, then you must be a licensed automobile dealer.
In Florida, motor vehicle dealers are licensed and regulated by the Division of Motor Vehicles under Section 320.27 Florida Statutes.
Florida law states that any person, firm partnership, or corporation that buys, sells, offers for sale, displays for sale or deals in three or more motor vehicles in any 12-month period is presumed to be a motor vehicle dealer and must have an appropriate license issued by the State.
License applications may be obtained from any Division of Motor Vehicles’ regional office.
buying a car from private seller that they bought in auction?
Seems more and more sellers are buying cars from auctions. Should i trust this kind of car some say the had it for 2 or 4 months? It checks out on autocheck, but would you buy are car from a private seller that bought it in a auction?
The first thing you want to be sure of is the title situation on the vehicle. Make sure that the seller has the title in their name, and is not trying to sell you the car with just auction paperwork. Unless you are a licensed dealer, you have to have a vehicle titled in your name before you can legally sell it. If there is a problem(such as the car being reported stolen) and the seller was not the legal titled owner, you could loose your car and the money you paid.
If the seller bought the car, titled it and then is selling it, there is no problem. Some people will buy a car, do some repairs on it, and sell it after a few months in the hope of making a profit. Most states allow a private seller to sell a few vehicles a year without getting a dealer license, as long as the car is titled in their name, and tax is paid.
Have any used car you are considering checked out by your own qualified mechanic prior to purchase. Autochek and Carfax are not a substitute for a hands on inspection.
Suppose a used car dealer has 100 cars for sale?
Suppose a used car dealer has 100 cars for sale. Match each pair of variables below with the type of association you would expect between them.
the age of the car and the number of miles on the odometer (i.e., total number of miles it has been driven)
The age of the car and its resale value (selling price)
the cargo capacity and the number of previous owners
A.positive association
B.weak or negative association
C.negative association
The age of the car and the number of miles on odometer is a positive association. This makes sense: If the car is older, it has probably driven more miles
The age of the car and its resale value is a negative association. Think about it; the older the car is, the lower its resale value. Thus, if age goes up, price goes down, meaning there’s a negative association
The cargo capacity and the number of previous owners doesn’t really affect price too much, so it has a weak or negative association.
